Job Description

Midas Selection are currently partnering with a unique business who provide cutting edge technology into the automotive manufacturing industry. This new patented technology is enabling cost effective, lightweight production of vehicle structures in the automotive and transport sectors.

Together we are looking for a talented Metallurgist to join the businesses growing team, you will be working to develop their patented hot aluminium forming process. You will play an important part in scaling up core technologies for high volume manufacture as well as working with material suppliers to develop new techniques to further improve the process. You will work with colleagues, customers, OEMs and Project Partners to develop and document core know-how, and support the deployment of this process onto customer production lines.

In addition to your specific knowledge of aluminium metallurgy and practical experience you will be confident with statistical data analysis and an awareness of quality tools such as Design of Experiments and 6-sigma would be beneficial. Reporting into the Senior Metallurgist, you will mainly be lab based and be a key part of the team describing and developing the patented process with a particular focus on microstructural evolution and control for current and new specific aluminium grades.


• Lead and deliver strategic R&D projects
• Contribute to mapping out approaches for proving scalable solutions
• Develop a fundamental understanding of the interaction of the material with the process to achieve desired properties, meet quality standard and optimise ‘value added’
• Develop standardised material characterisation procedures to aid process optimisation
• Advise on material choice and develop selection criteria for design engineers
• Create and document suitable material specifications ready for the introduction of new optimised aluminium grades


• Degree or higher qualification in Metallurgy or Materials Science or a related Science or Engineering subject plus relevant industrial or research experience
• Organised, structured and self-motivated
• Experience of safely and methodically planning and conducting laboratory tests
• Confident in statistical data analysis
• Strong interpersonal, communication and team-working skills
• Strong technical reporting and presentation skills
• Quick learner and adaptable
• Has the right to work in the UK


• Experience of aluminium metallurgy R&D and working with OEM customers preferably in the automotive or aerospace industry
• Project management experience
• Awareness of quality tools such as 6 sigma and Design of Experiments
